Also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast enlargement is designed to add volume and shape to the breasts through the surgical insertion of breast implants. Breast enlargement is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures, and has helped women throughout the world achieve the body proportions they desire. Women seek breast enlargement for a variety of reasons, including:
Our plastic surgeon, serving San Antonio and the Austin area, tailors all breast enlargement procedures to each individual patient. Dr. Constance Barone will discuss all aspects of breast augmentation with you during the initial consultation.
The best candidates for breast enlargement are women who are in reasonably good physical health and are looking for enhancement and improvement, not necessarily perfection. Having realistic expectations of results is also an important part of the process. Patients must be aware that breast augmentation can boost self-confidence and enhance appearance, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause others to treat you differently. Please think carefully about what you want out of breast enlargement, and why, and discuss all of your goals with Dr. Barone.
Breast implants come in a variety of types, shapes, and sizes. The type of implant used for your breast enlargement procedure will depend on your aesthetic goals, and the recommendations made by Dr. Barone after your initial breast implants evaluation at our San Antonio center serving all of South Texas. The two most commonly used breast implants, both approved by the Food and Drug Administration, are saline breast implants and silicone breast implants.
Saline breast implants are made of a silicone outer shell that is filled with a saltwater solution. Saline implants are soft and durable and are available in round and teardrop shapes to conform to the patient's natural body contour. Most saline implants are filled after implant placement, allowing for a smaller incision to insert them. In cases of implant rupture, saline is easily absorbed by the body and implant deflation is noticeable almost immediately
Silicone breast implants are also composed of a silicone outer shell; however, these types of implants are filled with a silicone gel that can often look and feel more natural than saline implants. The appearance of rippling is also less common in silicone than in saline breast implants. Silicone implants often yield better breast enlargement results in women who are very thin or those who are receiving breast reconstruction surgery
The FDA has approved saline breast implants for women ages 18 and over, and silicone implants for women 22 and older.

At your initial breast enlargement consultation, Dr. Constance Barone will discuss every detail of the procedure with you, and you will both decide which surgical options will be best to meet your cosmetic goals. This will be a frank discussion and Dr. Barone encourages you to be honest and direct about your expectations. She will, in turn, be just as honest and direct with you regarding risks, limitations, and possible alternatives that may better suit your needs.
Preparations for breast enlargement surgery will include guidelines for you to follow before the procedure, including limitations on eating, drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain medications or vitamin supplements. Patients should arrange for a ride home after the procedure, and someone to care for them for a few days, if necessary.
The surgery itself will be performed as an outpatient procedure at our state-of-the-art surgery center or in one of our affiliated hospitals here in the San Antonio and Austin area. Breast enlargement candidates may also have the procedure as an in-patient, in which case at least one overnight stay should be expected. Breast enlargement is typically performed under general anesthesia; however, local anesthesia combined with a sedative can also be used.
Locations of the incisions and whether your implants will be placed directly behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle will be decided before the procedure. Incisions are typically made in one of three areas:
Transumbilical breast augmentation, or TUBA, is an innovative new method of inserting breast implants through the navel, dramatically reducing the appearance of scars. Whichever method of insertion is chosen, Dr. Barone will make any residual scarring as inconspicuous as possible.
After the incision is made, Dr. Barone will lift the breast tissue to create a pocket for the implant. The implant is then placed and the incisions closed. The entire procedure generally takes about one to two hours to complete.
Some pain and discomfort should be expected for several days after breast enlargement, but these side effects can be alleviated with medication. There will also be some swelling, bruising, and a burning sensation or numbness in the nipples; however these should dissipate in the first few weeks after the procedure. Stitches will be removed within 10 days of surgery. Dr. Barone will advise you on how long you should rest before you start exercising or going about your daily routine.
Patients are typically able to resume normal activities within a few days. Direct stimulation of the breasts should be avoided for two to three weeks after surgery.
Patients are advised to continue having mammograms after breast enlargement surgery; however, a special mammogram designed to see around the implants will be needed to achieve accurate results.
As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks involved with breast enlargement. Some of these risks include:
Although breast implants should not interfere with breastfeeding, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant and plan to breastfeed should discuss this with Dr. Barone at the initial breast implants consultation at our South Texas center. The majority of women do not experience these types of complications; however, you are highly encouraged to address any concerns you have about possible risks with Dr. Barone before the procedure.
Breast enlargement is a popular procedure for women who are looking to revitalize their appearances after pregnancy. Although having children can be a wonderful experience for any new mom, the fact is that it can take a toll on the body, causing excess abdominal skin, sagging breasts, and other issues. A Mommy Makeover is a comprehensive plastic surgery option that combines a number of procedures, including breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, liposuction, and BOTOX® injections to give the body a boost and increase self-esteem.
