Local or “awake” surgery allows Dr. Barone to perform a procedure without altering the consciousness of the patient. These local or awake cosmetic surgery techniques render the part of the body that is being operated on insensitive to pain (and in many instances touch and temperature as well) by blocking the signals of peripheral nerve endings from being sent to the central nervous system.
