Breast augmentation can help women achieve fuller breasts and improved contours overall. Traditional augmentation techniques usually result in extensive scarring, though. Fortunately, Dr. Constance Barone now offers the trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) technique. With this procedure, the sole incision is created within the navel, making it as small and discreet as possible. The singular incision also makes the TUBA breast augmentation recovery process faster for our San Antonio, TX patients.

TUBA Breast Augmentation Healing Period

In most cases, Dr. Barone can complete the TUBA procedure in just 30 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, you will spend an hour or two in one of our recovery rooms before we release you to go home. The quick nature of this procedure significantly reduces traditional surgical risks such as reactions to the anesthesia. Because just one incision is needed, your risk of infection is also reduced.

First 24 Hours

After surgery, we will place compression bandages over your chest and abdomen. These are typically removed within 24 hours, after which you can take a shower. Over the first 24 hours, you will likely experience some pain and swelling. Dr. Barone will provide you with pain medications, which you should take as directed to minimize your discomfort.

Three to Four Days Post-TUBA

Over the next several days, you will notice changes in sensation, discomfort, and appearance. It can take a week or more for your implants to properly “settle” into position. The degree of pain you experience during this time is often dependent on the placement you chose for your implants. In general, patients who selected sub-muscular placement - that is beneath the chest muscle - experience more pain than those who chose above-the-muscle placement.

You will also probably see changes in bruising and swelling during this time. This is normal and should fade completely within a few weeks. To help ensure a speedy recovery, Dr. Barone recommends patients begin light activities during this time. Walking is an excellent way to enhance blood flow and stimulate healing. You should avoid bending over and picking things up for at least a week.

One to Two Weeks Post-TUBA

While you may not return to your full activities within just one week, most patients find they can return to work within a week of surgery. By week two following your surgery, you should have reincorporated most of your regular activities back into your routine. Dr. Barone can advise you on when you can begin more strenuous exercises such as strength training. The placement of your implants (above or below the muscle) will likely dictate when you can return to these activities.

After about two weeks, your implants should be settled and most of the swelling should have faded. At this time, your final breast augmentation results will become more visible. With Dr. Barone’s expertise, you have little need to worry about post-surgical asymmetry or other risks.
