Get a Mommy Makeover with Plastic Surgery after Pregnancy
Motherhood brings an abundance of joy to women, but it can leave them feeling unhappy with the appearance of their bodies. Today, more and more mothers are turning to plastic surgery after pregnancy to regain their figures and confidence. At the San Antonio plastic surgery practice of Dr. Constance M. Barone, we offer the most popular and effective procedures for mommy makeovers.
Liposuction
With liposuction, Dr. Barone can remove fat from problem areas that don't respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not intended to remove extensive amounts of fat that is distributed throughout the body; it is best suited to removing bulges of fat in one or two specific areas of the body. The best candidates for liposuction should be average or slightly above average weight. During the liposuction procedure, small incisions are created in the skin through which a cannula, a small, stainless steel instrument, is inserted. The cannula is moved within the fatty areas between the muscle and skin and suctions out the extra fat.
Tummy Tuck
A common side effect of pregnancy is excess abdominal skin. Unfortunately, diet and exercise do not get rid of the excess fat and skin that often results from pregnancy. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that allows Dr. Barone to remove excess fat and skin on the stomach, tighten underlying abdominal muscles, and produce the flat stomach that patients desire. Patients may undergo a complete abdominoplasty or a partial abdominoplasty. A complete abdominoplasty is used on patients needing major correction. A partial, or mini, abdominoplasty is best suited to patients requiring less correction; mini tummy tuck candidates typically have fat and excess skin below the belly button.
Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift
Pregnancy and breast-feeding cause the breast skin to stretch out. Once women have stopped breast-feeding, the breasts may look deflated or saggy. For our patients in San Antonio, breast augmentation can add volume and a slight lift to the breasts after pregnancy. Breast implants come in two types, saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water and silicone implants are filled with a plastic gel. Many women prefer silicone over saline as they believe silicone feels more natural.
A breast lift can correct more severe sagging and allows Dr. Barone to reposition the nipple and produce a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Stretch Mark Removal
Stretch marks, or striae, are a common in women that have been pregnant. Stretch marks occur when the elastic layer of the skin is damaged from stretching; this can occur as a result of weight gain and rapid weight loss. Over-the-counter creams and lotions are not very useful in diminishing the appearance of stretch marks, but many women have experienced success in having their stretch marks treated with laser treatments. By focusing the laser on stretch marks, the elastic layer of the skin is stimulated to produce new collagen.
