Breast Reduction Surgery San Antonio
Planning
Dr. Constance Barone will discuss the entire breast reduction procedure with you during your initial consultation at our San Antonio offices. She encourages you to be frank and honest in your expectations, and she will be equally as honest in how the procedure may or may not benefit you. At this first meeting, Dr. Barone will measure your breasts and possibly photograph them for reference during surgery. This consultation is the perfect time to ask questions and relay concerns to Dr. Barone, and she will address all of these issues with you. Dr. Barone will also use this time to discuss cost and financing aspects of the procedure. Since breast reduction surgery can often be a medical necessity.
Preparation
Before surgery, you may need to undergo a mammogram. You will also be given guidelines on diet and which medications and vitamins to take or avoid prior to the breast reduction procedure. Dr. Barone also advises you to arrange for someone to take you home after the surgery, and to help you with your needs for a few days, if necessary.
Breast Reduction Results
The Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction can be performed here at our San Antonio facility or at one of our affiliated hospitals on an out- or in-patient basis. The procedure is nearly always performed under general anesthesia. Although breast reduction surgical techniques vary, Dr. Barone will likely utilize the traditional method of creating an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola and extends downward to the natural crease of the breast. Fat, skin, and glandular tissue will be removed, and the nipple and areola re-positioned. Depending on the extent of the procedure, breast reduction usually takes about three to four hours to complete. If only fat needs to be removed to achieve a significant breast reduction, liposuction alone may be sufficient instead of the more invasive breast surgery.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Our San Antonio and Austin-area breast reduction patients should expect some pain and discomfort after the procedure, but this can be alleviated with medication. Swelling may also be present for several weeks, which may cause some loss of feeling in the nipples and breast skin. This is generally temporary; however, some patients have reported permanent sensation loss. Patients can typically resume normal daily routines after about two weeks; however, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least three to four weeks.
It's important for patients to know that there is extensive and permanent scarring from the procedure; however, Dr. Barone will make residual scars as inconspicuous as possible, and they will fade over time.
