In general, any patient considering breast augmentation should be in good physical health. Patients must confirm that they have stopped using supplements and medication that cause bleeding, since this can further complicate surgery. These include fish oil, aspirin, and herbal supplements.

Dr. Barone typically recommends TUBA breast augmentation to transgender patients because it results in minimal, easily concealed scarring. On the day of your surgery, Dr. Barone may administer general anesthesia, though she also provides “awake” breast augmentation using only local anesthesia.
During surgery, Dr. Barone will make a small incision less than 2 centimeters in length in your navel. Next, she will insert insert an empty implant shell, which she will subsequently fill with sterile saline solution. You may choose a subtle increase in breast size, or a more dramatic increase to create large, shapely breasts. Once the implants are full, Dr. Barone will close your incisions.
Transgender and traditional breast implant surgery are performed in a similar manner. Patients transitioning from male to female have larger pectoral muscles, so Dr. Barone typically recommends subpectoral placement of the implants to create a more natural appearance. Dr. Barone performs breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants via the nipple or the inframammary and transaxillary approach.
Transgender breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will can expect to return home the day of your surgery. We ask that you arrange for a friend or loved one drive you home following the procedure.
