Fat Transfer Lip Injections
By Constance M. Barone, M.D. on March 01, 2016
Do you look at your face and long for plumper, more voluptuous lips? Whether your lips became smaller as you aged or thin lips have always been part of your life, you can now have the lips you’ve always wanted, without major surgery. With fat transfer lip injections, Dr. Constance Barone can add volume to your lips in a single, outpatient procedure that won’t leave any scars. The fat transfer procedure involves the removal of fat from one area of the body; the fat can then be purified and re-injected into another area of the body. About Fat Transfer
By harvesting fat cells from your own body with liposuction, Dr. Barone offers safe, effective, autologous lip injections that won’t introduce foreign substances to your system. This improves the potential for your body to readily accept the fat graft. If you have an allergy to collagen or Hylaform®, an autologous procedure is ideal.
Any fat transfer procedure has three basic steps. First, fat cells are harvested via liposuction, usually from the belly, thighs, buttocks, or jowls. The incision for harvesting will be extremely small. You and Dr. Barone will decide in advance which area of your body should provide the fat graft. Next, cells are isolated and cleaned. The third step is injecting the cells into the target area - which, in this case, is the lips.
The Lip Injection Procedure
The day surgery will take place in our surgical suite, and you’ll be under local anesthesia. Don’t take NSAIDs, such as Motrin® or aspirin, for at least two weeks prior to your scheduled surgery. You should also refrain from smoking before and after the procedure. Dr. Barone will harvest fat cells from the area that you and she discussed in your consultation, using a syringe and small liposuction cannula. A centrifuge will separate the cells so Dr. Barone can use the best live cells for your fat transfer.
At the corner of one side of your mouth, Dr. Barone will make a tiny incision. This site will allow her to inject thin strips of fat to volumize your upper and lower lips as desired. No sutures are necessary, and you’ll be able to leave our office after your procedure.
Recovery and Results
Expect minimal recovery time and little discomfort, if any. Most patients resume work and play the day following lip augmentation injections. If needed, you may take over-the-counter pain relievers. We will also provide you with post-operative instructions.
Fat transfer with your own cells ensures that results will last six to 24 months, on average, and sometimes longer. This is significantly longer than other dermal fillers, such as Restylane®.
Across all cultures and times, plump, sensual lips have been considered beautiful. In addition to creating a more youthful appearance, lip augmentation with autologous fat injection will eliminate the fine lines that trap lipstick.
